How fuel cost is calculated
Fuel Cost = (Distance ÷ MPG) × Gas Price
First, divide your trip distance by your vehicle's MPG to get the gallons needed. Then multiply by the current gas price per gallon.
For example, a 500 mile trip at 28 MPG with gas at $3.50/gallon costs $62.50 in fuel.
Fuel cost per mile by vehicle type
| Vehicle Type | Typical MPG | Cost/Mile @ $3.50/gal |
|---|---|---|
| Large Truck/SUV | 17 MPG | $0.21 |
| Midsize SUV | 25 MPG | $0.14 |
| Sedan | 32 MPG | $0.11 |
| Hybrid | 48 MPG | $0.07 |
| Electric (equivalent) | 100+ MPGe | $0.04 |
Ways to reduce your fuel costs
- 💰 Use gas price apps like GasBuddy to find the cheapest fuel near you.
- 🛣️ Plan efficient routes. Shorter distance = less fuel, even if it takes slightly longer.
- 🚗 Carpool when possible. Splitting fuel costs between passengers is the easiest way to save.
- ⚡ Consider a fuel-efficient vehicle. The difference between 20 MPG and 35 MPG saves over $1,000/year for average drivers.
