How to Calculate MPG

Calculating your miles per gallon (MPG) is simple. You need two numbers:

MPG = Miles Driven ÷ Gallons Used

For example, if you drove 350 miles and used 12.5 gallons of gas, your fuel economy is 28 MPG.

How to Track Your Gas Mileage

  1. Fill up your tank completely and note your odometer reading (or reset your trip meter).
  2. Drive normally until you need to refuel.
  3. Fill up again and note how many gallons it took and your new odometer reading.
  4. Subtract the old odometer reading from the new one to get miles driven.
  5. Divide miles by gallons — that's your MPG.

What Is Good MPG?

Average fuel economy varies by vehicle type. Here's a general guide:

Vehicle Type Average MPG Rating
Large SUV / Truck 15–20 MPG Below average
Midsize SUV / Crossover 22–28 MPG Average
Sedan / Compact Car 28–35 MPG Good
Hybrid 40–55 MPG Excellent
Plug-in Hybrid 55–100+ MPGe Outstanding

Tips to Improve Your MPG

  • Keep tires properly inflated. Under-inflated tires increase rolling resistance and reduce MPG by up to 3%.
  • Drive at steady speeds. Aggressive acceleration and braking can lower fuel economy by 15–30% on the highway.
  • Reduce excess weight. Every 100 lbs of extra weight reduces MPG by about 1%.
  • Use cruise control on highways. Maintaining a constant speed avoids fuel-wasting speed fluctuations.
  • Keep up with maintenance. Clean air filters, fresh spark plugs, and proper oil all improve efficiency.
